About Chiune Sugihara

Chiune Sugihara, a Japanese diplomat, was instrumental in saving the lives of many Jews during the Second World War.  He set the standard for righteous diplomats in issuing 2000 travel visas to Jews in Lithuania in 1940 -- against the instructions of his government.  These visas permitted 6000 Jews to cross Siberia to Japan where they were welcomed by the government and people.  Within a few months, virtually all of those saved continued to America, where they could start new lives.  Chiune Sugihara was dismissed from the Japanese foreign ministry shortly after the war, and was virtually unknown and unacknowledged throughout his life.   Since his death in 1986, his action has been reassessed by the Japanese diplomatic community and has become recognized as a righteous man.   He is now a symbol of ethical action to peoples around the world, with his actions lauded in institutions in Japan, Israel, USA and Lithuania.
