The Departure

Tuesday, December 5, 2017 from 8 PM

Cable Car Cinema
204 South Main Street Providence, RI 02903

Cable Car Cinema will be showing the award-winning film THE DEPARTURE by Lana Wilson. The documentary is about Ittetsu Nemoto, a former punk-turned-Buddhist-priest in Japan who has made a career out of helping suicidal people find reasons to live.

The documentary screening will be followed by a discussion with Lana Wilson, which will be a rare chance to engage with the filmmaker in person while the film continues to tour around the country - This will also be an invaluable opportunity for community dialogue about the issues of suicide prevention in Japan that the film addresses.

About the Film:

Ittetsu Nemoto, a former punk-turned-Buddhist-priest in Japan, has made a career out of helping suicidal people find reasons to live. But this work has come increasingly at the cost of his own family and health, as he refuses to draw lines between his patients and himself. The Departure captures Nemoto at a crossroads, when his growing self-destructive tendencies lead him to confront the same question his patients ask him: what makes life worth living?
