Day of Remembrance 2018: Incarceration and Resistance

Join the Tufts Japanese Culture Club for their annual Day of Remembrance event, commemorating the February 19th, 1942 signing of Executive Order 9066, which effectively authorized the incarceration of people of Japanese ancestry into concentration camps during World War II.

This year, they will be screening the highly-anticipated film, Resistance at Tule Lake, shown at last year's Boston Asian American Film Festival. The feature-length documentary tells the long-suppressed story of incarcerated Japanese Americans who defied the government by refusing to swear unconditional loyalty to the U.S.

Following the screening, students from Japanese Culture Club (JCC*) and United for Immigrant Justice (UIJ) will lead a panel about how the history of Japanese American incarceration lives in the present through the ongoing stakes of American citizenship. What did and what does resistance look like when “being American" is made conditional to loyalty and silence?

Admission is free and dinner will be served at the event.
