Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Thursday, August 9, 2018 from 6:30 - 10:30 PM

Museum of Fine Arts,
Huntington Ave. near Forsyth Way (EX08),
Avenue of the Arts, 465 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02115

Directed by Hayao Miyazaki (Japan, 1984, 140 min.). Digital. Dubbed in English with English subtitles.

The debut film from animator Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro), this lush dystopian epic is considered by many to be his masterwork. Set in a future world devastated by atmospheric poisons and swarming with gigantic insects, Nausicaä is the story of a young princess whose love for all living things and passionate determination to understand the processes of nature lead her into terrible danger, sacrifice, and eventual triumph. Nausicaä is part of the film series Heroic, celebrating female heroes on screen throughout the month of August in conjunction with the MFA’s exhibit Casanova’s Europe: Art, Pleasure and Power in the 18th Century.

This event is part of a series of exciting activities in the MFA neighborhood on August 9. Starting at 5:00, head over to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s Block Party to enjoy music, stilt dancers, performance, food trucks, stone carving, gallery games, and hands-on art making inside the museum and out. From 5:30-6:30 in the Back Bay Fens, check out the Emerald Necklace Conservancy’s debut presentation of a sound and dance performance by Beau Kenyon as part of a new outdoor exhibition of fog art by Fujiko Nakaya

At the MFA, live music, lawn games, and art-making activities begin at 6:30 pm. Bring a blanket or low chair (maximum 3 feet high), a picnic supper, and nonalcoholic beverages to enjoy during the film. Beer, wine, and snacks are available for purchase. Seating is limited; arrive early to guarantee your spot. The film begins at sundown, around 8 pm.

Co-presented with Anime Boston and the Boston Women’s Film Festival.
