Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda (Japan, 2018, 121 min.). Digital. In Japanese with English subtitles.  After winning the top prize at this year’s Cannes Film festival, Shoplifters is now winning hearts all over the world. Directed by the masterful Hirokazu Kore-eda, it follows a young father named Osamu who finds a little girl in the freezing cold after a shoplifting session with his son. At first reluctant to provide shelter to the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them.
