A nature walk through the New England landscape and a visit to the culturally rich Edwin O. Reischauer Memorial House in Belmont. Reischauer was a renowned East Asian scholar at Harvard University and U.S. Ambassador to Japan (1961-1966). His former home is now used by visiting scholars connected with the Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies at Harvard and also preserves memorabilia of his career. It is the only private residence in the U.S. where the Japanese Empress and Emperor have ever spent a night and it is an intriguing attraction for Japanese and those interested in cross-cultural awareness. Adjacent to the home is the 90-acre Massachusetts Audubon wildlife sanctuary, Habitat. We will walk from Habitat, led by a Habitat staff-member, to the Reischauer House for a visit before returning through the sanctuary.
