Isezaki Koichiro is the first son of Living National Treasure Isezaki Jun and is the rising star of the Isezaki family which included his grandfather Isezaki Yozan, one of the first generation of great Bizen potters in the 20th century. Isezaki Koichiro studied at Tokyo Sculptural University and then apprenticed with the New York based potter Jeff Shapiro, who had been mentored by Isezaki Jun. Part of the great Bizen lineage that includes his father Isezaki Jun and Kakurezaki Ryuichi, his father's highly regarded apprentice. Isezaki Koichiro is making a name for himself with his freely creative pottery, going beyond tradition.

"one thing that has been on my mind since i started my life with pottery is that i dig the earth, shape it, and fire it by wood. Material chooses technique, technique chooses material. I believe that means potential, not a boundary. - Koichiro Isezaki
